Scholarships for Study Abroad

Travel scholarships are aimed at funding your expenses of traveling overseas. Frequently they cover all or a portion of your airfare. 

The AD Passport Scholarship

• Each semester this company offers a scholarship to reimburse recipient for the cost of their flight to study abroad. 

Benjamin Franklin Travel Grant (France)

• Provides successful candidates with a stipend of $900 to support their travel to France.
• Gives selected candidates the possibility to travel to France according to their academic and professional projects (studies, internship, specific visits...)
• Offers selected students the opportunity to access the network of Benjamin Franklin Alumni.
• Open to Sophomore, Junior & Senior students who have reached their 18th birthday before departure. Students must be enrolled in a double major program combining a major in French and a major in another discipline in an American University when applying. Consideration will also be given to students enrolled in a minor/certificate in French and majoring in another subject.

CSU IP Travel Scholarship

• Awarded by merit to participants on CSU IP study abroad programs.
• Submit your scholarship application with your study abroad application by the program deadline. 
• Around $500 each.

HI USA

• The Explore the World Travel Scholarship is for aspiring global travelers who want to give back while they experience another culture.
• Scholarship recipients will receive $2,000 to support a trip that includes an educational or service component.
• This scholarship is available in 13 metropolitan areas across the United States.

IEEC Travel Scholarship

• The IEEC gives out $1,000 scholarships each semester for study abroad applicants demonstrating need and merit.
• This scholarship is administrated by IEEC. Please contact IEEC at ieec@mail.sfsu.edu for more details. 

New Zealand Study Abroad Travel Award

• Must be a US citizen or hold US Resident status.
• Currently enrolled in at least Sophomore year at a tertiary institution in the United States of America.
• 18 years or above at the time of application.
• Hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 in tertiary studies to date (4.0 scale).
• $2,000 each.

STA Scholarship 

• $2500 study abroad scholarships are available for students who desire to gain an international education through a donation from STA Travel.
• At the time of applying for a scholarship, you must be enrolled in a North American college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your degree being earned.
• You must be a US citizen to apply.
• Students must be majoring in one of the following areas (academic minors in these areas are not eligible): Photography, Film, Art, Travel and Tourism, Foreign Language.

Merit-based scholarships are often centered around academic success and/or other forms of excellence.

The Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation

• Each year, the Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation gives out 1-3 scholarships per term to eligible and successful students.
• Recipient must be a U.S. citizen.
• Recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at their current institution, verifiable on their transcript.
• Recipient must be successful in writing a short essay.
• Awards are given in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
• Applications not accepted for Spring 2022 semester due to COVID-19, but are expected to open again for the Fall 2022 semester.
• $4,000 each.

Chicana/Latina Foundation 

• Each year the Chicana Latina Foundation awards merit-based scholarships to Latina College students, valued at $1,500 each.

Chinese Government Scholarship

• Applicants must:

  • be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health both mentally and physically.

  • be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for undergraduate programs;

  • be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master’s programs;

  • be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs;

  • be a high school graduate (at least) under the age of 45 when applying for general scholar programs;

  • be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for senior scholar programs.\

  • have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 3 when applying for Chinese-taught undergraduate or general scholar programs (studying Chinese language are exempted); \

  • have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 3 when applying for Chinese-taught senior scholar programs;

  • have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 4 when applying for Chinese-taught master’s or doctoral programs;

  • meet the admission requirements of the applied universities in terms of academic ability, language proficiency and other relevant criteria. 

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation

• The Foundation supports undergraduate college/university Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts who plan to study abroad, irrespective of major/minor.
• $1,000 each.

Dilena Takeyama Center Scholarship Progam (Japan)

• The Dilena Takeyama Center Scholarship is intended to support San Francisco State University students who plan to utilize their studies and future careers in ways that promote improved relationships between the United States and Japan.
• Two scholarships in the amount of $3,500 will be awarded to SF State students to participate in year-long CSU/SF State certified Study Abroad institution (California State University International Programs or SF State Bilateral Exchanges) in Japan.

Good Colleges Study Abroad Award

• Each year, a $2,000 cash prize is awarded to a student looking to study abroad.
• To apply for this scholarship, students must submit a short essay centered around a specific theme.

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (Taiwan)

• A fixed monthly stipend of NT$25,000, no other stipend (Exchange rate Appox: 1 US = 30 NT).
• Applicants must be American citizens, above the age of 18, who possess a high school diploma or above, and demonstrate excellent academic performance.
• Those whose official residency is in “North California, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming” should apply to Education Division of TECO in San Francisco (555 Montgomery Street, #503, San Francisco, CA 94111).

IP Ghana Scholarship 

• This scholarship is available to students accepted into the IP Ghana Program.
• $1,000 each.

Michelle Marriott Memorial Scholarship Award 

• A qualified student will be selected each year from participants in Aix-en-Provence (CSU IP French Language and Culture Program) to receive $1,500.

STA Scholarship 

• $2500 study abroad scholarships are available for students who desire to gain an international education through a donation from STA Travel.
• At the time of applying for a scholarship, you must be enrolled in a North American college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your degree being earned.
• You must be a US citizen to apply.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship

• Twice a year, a $1,000 scholarship is given to prospective Fall and Spring semester study abroad students.
• Applicants must submit a 500-word essay for a chance to receive this.

Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) 

• Eligible students will receive between $500 and $2,000. Since 2007, these scholarships have subsidized the cost of study abroad for students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad programs.
• They also serve as an incentive for students to consider Turkey as a potential study abroad destination.

Walter Jensen Scholarship for Study Abroad (France)

• Scholarship for future French teachers to study abroad in France.
• $2,000 each.

Ward Wallach Memorial Scholarship

• An annual scholarship award of $500 is given to an accepted participant in Japan.

WSA Europe Cultural Bridge Scholarship

• The Cultural Bridge Scholarship was designed to help defray the costs of studying abroad and $500 is awarded to a student twice a year (Spring/Fall semesters).
• All American undergraduate students with plans to study abroad in Europe are encouraged to apply.
• WSA Europe will award the scholarship based on passion and merit.

Need based scholarships are awarded to students according to financial need. 

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)

• SF State is a member of HACU, which offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. Please check the website for specific deadlines for the different HACU scholarships.
• $1,000 to $4,250 each.

Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF)

• The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars.

• Students pursuing their first undergraduate degree:

  • High school seniors

  • Students with GED diplomas

  • Students enrolled in undergraduate programs

• US citizen or Permanent Resident
• 25 years old or younger
• Minimum 2.0 GPA
• Household income not exceeding $75,000 USD

The U.S.-Japan Council Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship

• Financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in either the United States or Japan.
• The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.
• The scholarship will be awarded to Japanese students who meet the following criteria:
  • Demonstrated Financial need.
  • Will be enrolled in a credit-bearing course of study in a higher educational institution outside Japan (home school).
  • Japanese students accepted by U.S. school under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement with their home school.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have been raised by a single parent or who have lost both parents.

Scholarships based upon financial need and academic or extra-curricular success.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

• The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards for study abroad for U.S. citizen or U.S. national students who are receiving Pell Grants as part of their financial aid. 
• Successful recipients receive up to $8,000 (with critical language supplement) for one semester or the academic year. Awards are given in the fall and spring.
• SF State is nationally a Top Producer for this scholarship!

Freeman-Asia

• Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.
• Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States.
• Up to $7,000.

Fund for Education Abroad: General Scholarship

• FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.
• Priorities
  • To support students in programs known for its academic rigor and immersion elements.
  • To support students studying the language of the host country (if not English).
  • To support students in programs with a sustainable service-learning or volunteering component.
  • To support students in programs in non-traditional destinations.
  • To support students that demonstrate financial need.
  • To support students who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.

Immigrants Rising

• Undocumented students pursuing higher education need to know that scholarships are available to them—regardless of their immigration status.
• Up to $10,000.

Rainbow Scholarship

• This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving LGBTQI student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program.

SF State Alumni Association

• A variety of $1,500 scholarships available from the SF State Alumni Association.

The Associated Students Scholarship

• SF State scholarship awarding up to $1,000 to SF State students who have shown leadership abilities.
• 2.50 minimum GPA.

The Toshizo Watanabe​ Study Abroad Scholarship

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Currently in good academic standing at an accredited college or university in the United States.
• Undergraduate and graduate students (international study by the means of study abroad program or independently enrolling as a degree-seeking students)
• Will be enrolled in an exchange program or credit-bearing course of study at a university or approved academic center in Japan in the upcoming academic year. Applicants who have not confirmed a school or are already enrolled in a Japanese school as a degree-seeking student are eligible. Cannot be used for language schools.
• Demonstrates financial need for international study (i.e., would not be able to pursue international study without financial assistance or support)
• Priority given to undergraduates. Graduate students and international degree-seeking students may also apply.

Other types of scholarships available.

American Association on Health & Disability

• AAHD offers scholarships for students who have a disability and want to study a field that will impact quality of life for persons with disabilities.
• Funds are limited to under $1,000.

Baden Wuerttemberg Scholarship

• Available to advanced students of German participating in CSU IP study abroad in Germany.
• Provides a limited number of scholarships for study in Germany through the CSU International Programs. The award is 400 Euros per month and can be awarded for up to 11 months. Applicants must have completed at least 4 semesters of German prior to departure. Your application must be sent to Germany by the Office of International Programs (OIP).
• Apply with your CSU IP application by the application deadline. 

Bridging Scholarship

• The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.
• $2,500 (Semester), $4,000 (Academic Year).

DAAD Scholarship (Germany)

• Undergraduate Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany.
• Around 650 euros per month.

Fullbright Grants and Fellowships

• The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships. A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a country outside the U.S.

Tim Wiese Memorial Scholarship (Disabilities Students)

• Provides financial support for continuing SFSU students with disabilities who are in good academic standing who are either undergraduate students enrolled in at least 6 units or graduate students who are enrolled in at least 4 units.
• $800 each.
